DONALD J. BASSLER, PE
CHIEF MECHANICAL ENGINEER
DONALD J. BASSLER, PE has been practicing engineering in Alaska, continuously with RBA since 1979. His primary focus has been with fuel tanks, steam piping, power plant projects, energy conservation, institutional and industrial HVAC, and waste heat recovery. He has been engineering projects for the US Government, State of Alaska, Municipality of Anchorage, Alaska Railroad and other agencies. He manages multi-discipline projects and supervises several technicians and engineers.

Mr. Bassler has extensive project experience with the Corps of Engineers. He has designed barracks, company operations facilities and a battalion headquarters for the Army. Most recently, he assisted in commissioning the Pallet Processing Center on Ft. Wainwright and Alaska Psychiactric Institute (API). For the US Air Force, he has prepared design-build performance specifications for 3 hangars --- Fuel Cell Maintenance, C-17 Dual Bay and F-22 Raptors. He has a proven track record on military installations such as Adak NAS, Elmendorf AFB, Fort Rich, Eielson AFB and USCG in Kodiak.

Mr. Bassler was heavily involved in the production of the Technical Energy Audit Manual for the State of Alaska including compilation of Energy Conservation Measures. Other studies he has participated in include the Statewide Lighting and Thermal Standards, and a DOT/PF Code Review for Energy Conservation.

PROJECT EXPERIENCE

Donald Bassler has designed schools, offices, hospitals, food service establishments, State buildings and Federal projects. He has been involved with commercial and industrial buildings and has designed numerous projects from Ketchikan to Barrow. His largest projects have been the $50M Alaska SeaLife Center in Seward, and Colony Jr. High School ($16.5M), in Palmer. A short list of Mr. Bassler’s three sample projects is as follows:

US AIR FORCE & ALASKA AIRLINES HANGARS, 1999-2007

During a span of seven years, RBA has engineered several projects for Alaska Airlines. Donald Bassler, PE had a role in most of these, including the Ground Service Equipment Shop, the old Wein Hangar (see photo) and the Cargo Warehouse. Mr. Bassler has a number of other aircraft hangar designs to his credit and also worked on Northern Air Cargo headquarters. For the US Army Corps of Engineers, Don Bassler prepared the performance specifications for the Fuel Cell Maintenance Hangar, the C-17 Dual Bay Hangar and the F-22 Raptor Hangar, all on Elmendorf AFB, 2004-2007, adding up to $150 million in construction cost.

ALASKA SEALIFE CENTER, 1998-2006

Completed in 1998, this $50 million facility has exhibit, research lab, educational and administrative areas. The sea-water tanks are home to seals, sea otters and marine birds. Other smaller tanks circulate sea water and fresh water using filters and ozone injectors. Don Bassler used sea-water for "free" air-conditioning and the lab hoods utilize the latest in variable flow technology for maximum energy conservation. Numerous facility upgrades have been designed under follow-up work for the client, based on prior art.

TED STEVENS ANCHORAGE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, 1985-2007

In 2007, the Hudson Euro Cafe’ is being designed by Donald Bassler, PE. At TSAIA he also worked on the Host Marriot Restaurant, Signature Fueling Facility and Airport Sewage Haul Facility. He was the lead mechanical on the $210 million AIA Project Management team for the Terminal Redevelopment. As such, Mr. Bassler has done peer-reviews, value engineering and cost estimating. In the past, he has also performed technical reviews for other DOT/PF airport projects and worked on the Ketchikan Airport Terminal.
